Exterior Projects to Tackle This Summer

It’s almost summer! With warmer weather comes the opportunity to pursue a variety of weekend home improvement projects. While you may not be able to tackle some of the more complicated plans – such as kitchen remodels or deck additions – there are many small improvements that can make your home much more inviting and functional. Spruce up your exterior with these tips.

  • Wipe down outdoor furniture. You don’t want to relax on a dusty, mildewed piece of patio furniture, and neither do your guests. Wipe down wood, plastic and metal furniture using a soft cloth and a solution of mild dish soap and water. A stiff-bristle brush can be used to remove any mold or mildew spots. Rinse well. Don’t forget to clean and rinse outdoor fabric cushions too.
  • Pressure wash the patio. Remove years of dirt and grime by spraying the entire deck or patio surface with a pressure washer. (If you have a deck made with composite materials, check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning it before you start.) For surfaces that are heavily soiled or mildewed, use a deck cleaner available at your local home improvement store. Avoid pressure washing exterior siding. High-pressure washing can force water underneath siding and damage paint finishes.
  • Repaint the front door. Winter’s wrath can do a number on a wood door, causing the surface to crack and warp over time. Applying a fresh coat of paint helps to seal the wood and protect it from the elements, while adding fresh pizzazz to the front entrance.
  • Prep the grill. If barbequing is a big part of your summer fun, inspect your grill to be sure all parts are in working order. Scrub grates and internal parts with a wire brush to remove burnt-on food particles and debris. Make sure the grease tray and drip pans are clean and clear. Remember to clean the exterior of the grill too.
