Seven Questions to Ask Your Siding Contractor
Before you sign on the dotted line for an engineered wood siding project, make sure you ask your siding contractor these seven questions. When you receive the answers you’re looking for, it will give you confidence that you’re awarding your project to the right company.
- How many years of experience do you have?
A contractor who is serious about his business will have many years of experience and a strong reputation for installing LP® CanExel® prefinished siding in your area. Ask the contractor for a business card and make sure it lists a legitimate address in your community. If a contractor doesn’t have professional business cards or uses only a postal box, it may be a good idea to find another contractor.
- Can I see proof of licensing, registration and insurance?
Protect your project from unnecessary delays by making sure your contractor is properly licensed or registered to install house siding. Also verify that the contractor has insurance coverage to protect you from any liability in the event of an accident while your LP CanExel prefinished siding is being installed.
- Do you have references?
Ask the contractor to provide references from customers he has installed CanExel prefinished siding for in your area. Also ask to see pictures of past projects and have the contractor explain why he’s providing these references.
- Does your estimate include all costs?
Confirm that the estimate includes labour, materials, waste removal, applicable permits and any other contractor incidentals. During any project, unforeseen problems may be uncovered as the original house siding is removed. This may increase your estimate if you choose to have your contractor complete the repairs.
- What are the product and workmanship warranties?
Make sure that your contractor is completely aware of the details of LP® CanExel’s® Limited Warranty for prefinished siding. Also ask about workmanship warranties that may come with all of the other materials used in your remodeling job so you’re prepared if a repair is needed in the future.
- Who will supervise the project every day and how often will we be in contact?
Before hiring a contractor, find out whether the work will be subcontracted and supervised, or whether the contractor will be installing the house siding himself. It’s important to know that your project will be properly managed from start to finish.
- How long will the project take?
Weather may cause delays to your house siding project. However, try to avoid a contractor who begins installing your house siding and then takes off for a week or two to work on other projects. Make sure your project will be worked on continuously until it’s complete.
